Acts 15:10-11: Salvation by Grace

Acts 15:10-11: Salvation by Grace

Acts 15:10-11: Salvation by Grace

I. The Pressure of the Problem (Verse 10a: "Why tempt ye God...")

  1. Protesting God’s Plans: The attempt to question or challenge the revealed will of the Holy Spirit.
  2. Proving Human Pride: The inherent desire to add personal work to God's divine work.

II. The Portrait of the Problem (Verse 10b: "...to put a yoke upon the neck...")

  1. Placing a Penalty: The act of imposing obligations where Christ has granted liberty.
  2. Piling a Pressure: Recognizing the Law, when pursued for justification, as a heavy, crushing burden.

III. The Problem's Past History (Verse 10c: "...which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?")

  1. Pattern of Perfection Failed: The historical admission that Israel, even with God’s covenant, could not meet the Law's demands.
  2. Proof of Perfection’s Need: The Law served its purpose by demonstrating humanity’s utter need for a Savior.

IV. The Power of the Pardon (Verse 11: "But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved...")

  1. Primacy of Perfect Grace: Establishing grace (charis)—undeserved favor—as the single means of salvation.
  2. Pivot on Perfect Jesus: Acknowledging Christ as the sole source and foundation of that saving grace.

V. The Practice of the Pardon (Verse 11: "...even as they.")

  1. Promotion of Partnership: The grace principle breaks down barriers, making all believers (Jew and Gentile) equal co-heirs.
  2. Pursuit of Peaceful Freedom: Living daily in the joy and liberation of salvation received, not salvation earned.
